Nestled amid the picturesque landscapes of Asahigawa, Kamuy Kotan unveils a natural wonder deeply rooted in Ainu mythology. he name itself, meaning "a place dwelled by the kamuy" in the Ainu language, echoes the sacred and remote nature of this enchanting location. Situated at the base of imposing cliffs, Kamuy Kotan marks the point where the Ishikari River transforms into tumultuous rapids, plunging as deep as 76 yards. For the Ainu people, this spot symbolizes both the awe-inspiring power of nature and the challenges they faced on their journeys. Legend has it that travelers once prayed to the kamuy at Kamuy Kotan for safe passage, adding a spiritual layer to the rugged landscape. In Ainu oral sagas known as yukar, Kamuy Kotan takes center stage as the battleground between good and evil. Nitnekamui, an evil spirit, sought to obstruct the Ainu's path, leading to a fierce confrontation with the benevolent mountain god Nupurikamui and the heroic Samaykur. The geological features, such as potholes and rocks, are believed to be traces of this mythical struggle.
