The Leymebamba Museum was built in 2000 to house over 200 mummies and a trove of beautiful pre-Incan Chachapoya ceramics, textiles, wooden figures, and more that were uncovered nearby. For nearly half a millennium, a group of burial tombs lay undiscovered high in the mountains before local farmers stumbled across them, and began looting the tombs of valuables. Luckily, the NGO Centro Mallqui, which specializes in bio-archaeological remains, was on hand to save the site. Along with protecting the tombs, Centro Mallqui helped establish the Leymebamba Museum so visitors can get a glimpse of the region's heritage. More than just a storehouse, the museum has thoughtful descriptions about the various artefacts in multiple languages, underlining its goal of education. The museum is open Monday to Sunday, 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM (Closed December 25 and January 1). Entry is approximately 4 EUR and guided tours can be reserved for an additional cost.
