The Menara Gardens were built in the early 12th century by the Almohad Caliphate ruler Abd al-Mu'min. The caliphate created a large lake, and surrounded it with orchards and olive trees. In the 16th century, the Saadi dynasty built a pavilion on the lakefront, which was renovated in 1869 by sultan Abderrahmane of Morocco as a summer retreat. Today, the Menara Gardens are perhaps the most popular public gardens in Marrakech. While the greenery is essentially a ring around the perimeter, the view of the lake, pavilion, trees, and snow-capped Atlas Mountains in the background is worth the visit.
