Founded in 871 by Louis II, it was dedicated to St. Clement when his remains were brought here in 872. During its early years, the abbey was plundered several times, prompting a period of reconstruction that lasted until the late 12th century. In the Romanesque facade, visitors can enjoy an intricate lunette that depicts the abbeyтАЩs history made for the illiterate medieval masses, while the famous bronze door depicts the castles and estates that were subjects of the abbey. Inside, visitors can admire the medieval ambo, decorated with palms, the symbol of martyrdom, and beautiful stone candle holder. The high altar is a Palaeo-Christian sepulchre with some 14th century modifications. Next to this, the relics of San Clemente are housed in a large marble casket. Below, the crypt was constructed using materials from the Roman settlement that once existed on the site. Please note: The abbey is open everyday between 9:00-13:30.
