The ancient settlement of Tel Hazor was established as early as the 3rd millennium BC, and developed into one of the most important Canaanite cities. Recorded in the Egyptian Execration texts, Tel Hazor was the largest fortified city in ancient Israel, and according to the Book of Joshua, the head of the Canaanite, Babylonian, and Syrian kingdoms. After being destroyed in the Late Bronze Age, Tel Hazor was resettled as an Israelite village and enjoyed a period of prosperity in the 8th century BC before being destroyed by the Assyrians in 732 BC. Today, the archaeological site preserves elements from multiple ancient cultures, from the 10th century BC monumental entrance gate, to a 13th century BC Canaanite palace, to an intricate 9th century water system that burrows 45 meters into the earth. Included in the ticket price is entry into the archaeological museum at Ayalet HaShachar where you’ll find artefacts unearthed at the site.
