The Secret Soviet Bunker was built at the height of the Cold War to provide shelter for elite of Soviet Latvia in case of a nuclear attack. This 213,000 square foot hideout was was fully stocked to 250 people for up to 3 months. Built beneath a spa center, for decades the employees didnтАЩt know about the secret bunker, or that their reflecting pool and basketball court were actually helipads. When Latvia joined NATO, the bunker didnтАЩt measure up to their standards, and was subsequently abandoned. Today, the site looks just as it did in the 1980s, complete with Soviet-era equipment. A fascinating tour explains the bunkerтАЩs inner-workings, from its power-plant and air purification systems, to contingency plans and the telecommunications hotline linked to the Kremlin. Visitors can also experience a true taste of the Soviet era by having a typical meal in the canteen. Please note: tours must be reserved in advance at http://www.bunkurs.lv/en/
