Avignon
Inhabited since the Neolithic period, this ancient cityโ€™s name was recorded for the first time in the 6th century BC when a fortified Greek settlement was built on top of the rocky outcrop overlooking the river. In 1309 Pope Clement V selected the city as his residence, and for the next several decades it would be the capital of all of Christendom, receiving a bounty of rich architecture, including the Palace of the Popes - the largest Gothic palace in Europe. Now a UNESCO site, within the castleโ€™s 18 foot thick walls, visitors can enjoy exploring staterooms, chapels, cloisters, and frescoed papal apartments. The cityโ€™s other UNESCO monument is the "Pont d'Avignon", of nursery-rhyme fame, the remains of a 14th century bridge. On top of the UNESCO sites, the cityโ€™s bounty of opulent churches, majestic palaces, and scenic streets make it hard for many visitors to pull themselves away.

Pont du Gard
Pont du Gard
In the 1st century AD, the burgeoning city of Nemausus (modern day Nรฎmes) was facing a growing water shortage, so the Romans had to build an aqueduct from Fontaine d'Eure 20 km away. The result was a winding, 50km long structure that descended 2.5 cm in 456 m, with variations in the slope because a constant gradient would have required the Pont du Gard be higher than they could feasibly build it. It served as an aqueduct until the 6th century before becoming a tollgate in the Middle Ages, and was used as a bridge from the 18th to 20th century. A massive project in started in 2000 cleared any construction from the surrounding area, putting the Pont du Gard back in its original setting. Along with seeing the monument, visitors also have access to a museum covering the aqueductโ€™s construction, and several other exhibitions relating to the areaโ€™s history. Before booking your visit, please check the siteโ€™s hours at http://www.pontdugard.fr/en/practical-information

Know more about your day trip

Don't miss the Palais des Papes, one of Europe's largest medieval Gothic buildings, and the Pont Saint-Bรฉnรฉzet bridge. Strolling through Avignon's historic center is a must, especially Place de l'Horloge for cafรฉs and people-watching.
Absolutely โ€” the Pont du Gard is a UNESCO-listed Roman aqueduct and a highlight of the region. Its scenic setting over the Gardon River and well-preserved structure make it a standout for history and photography lovers.
The drive takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes one way, depending on traffic. A private driver allows flexibility for sightseeing at both Avignon and Pont du Gard without needing to rush.
Yes, visitors can walk along the lower level of the Pont du Gard. There are also walking trails and a museum nearby that explore the aqueduct's history and Roman engineering.
Yes, with a private round-trip, it's very feasible. Most travelers spend the morning in Avignon and head to Pont du Gard in the afternoon for a relaxed visit and scenic views.
Several casual cafรฉs and restaurants are located near the Pont du Gard visitor center and along the riverbanks, offering local cuisine with beautiful views, perfect for a lunch break.
You should wear comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and clothing suitable for the weather. Bring your camera and, of course, an appetite for French cuisine!
