Oradea to Arad and Timisoara: Private day trip

Dating back to the 11th century, Arad proved itself an important fortification during the Mongol invasion of 1241. For the next several centuries it primarily played a military purpose, and it was here that Lajos Kossuth issued his famous proclamation, handing over supreme civil and military authority to Artúr Görgey during the Hungarian Revolution. For visitors interested in this important part of the region’s history, the city has a museum containing relics of the war for independence. In the 19th century, the town became an important railway hub and producer of railcars. This late boom makes Arad a treasure-trove for fans of neoclassical and Secession style architecture. As the largest city in western Romania, Timisoara has been influenced by many cultures. It was used as a crossroads fortress by the Romans, conquered by the Turkish armies in 1552, and came under Austrian rule for two centuries in the early 18th century. Settled on the northern bank of the Bega River, the charm of this city lies in its distinct architectural character and vibrant cultural life. Often referred to as “Little Vienna,” Timisoara is home to year-round musical and theatrical performances, art galleries, and museums. It was also the first European city (second in the world only to New York City) to use electricity to illuminate its public streets.
