Abu Simbel lies approximately 175 miles (280 kilometers) south of Aswan near the Sudanese border, requiring about three to three and a half hours of driving each way across desert landscape. Most travelers depart early morning to maximize time at the temples while avoiding midday desert heat, making this a full-day commitment.
Southern Egypt experiences extremely hot conditions, particularly from May through September when temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter months from November through February offer more moderate warmth, though still quite warm by many standards. Early morning departures help avoid peak heat. Travelers should bring sun protection, light clothing, and substantial water supplies regardless of season.

Gharb Soheil is a traditional Nubian village on an island near Aswan, showcasing the distinct culture, colorful architecture, and traditions of the Nubian people. Twice yearly, on February 22 and October 22, sunlight penetrates the Great Temple's inner sanctuary, illuminating three of the four statues inside while leaving the god of darkness in shadow. Ancient architects positioned the temple to create this precise solar alignment, demonstrating sophisticated astronomical knowledge. These dates supposedly commemorate Ramesses II's birthday and coronation, attracting special visitors during the phenomenon.
Abu Simbel features two massive rock temples built by Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. The Great Temple's facade includes four colossal seated statues of Ramesses II, each standing about 65 feet tall. In a remarkable engineering feat, UNESCO relocated the entire complex in the 1960s to save it from flooding caused by the Aswan High Dam construction, cutting it into blocks and reassembling it on higher ground.
