The border crossing between Spain and Andorra is just north of La Seu d'Urgell, and while checks are usually straightforward, you should have your travel documents ready. La Seu d'Urgell is approximately 125 miles (200 km) from Barcelona, about a 2.5-hour drive. From there, Andorra la Vella is only about 6 miles (10 km) further north, making the two destinations a natural pairing for a single day trip through the Pyrenees.

The cathedral is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 13:30 and again from 16:00 to 18:00. On Sundays, it is open from 10:00 to 13:00 only, and it is closed on Mondays. It is advisable to verify hours in advance, particularly around local holidays or special religious events.

Late spring through early autumn is generally the best time for this trip, when the mountain passes are clear, and the weather is comfortable for walking. Summer is warm and vibrant, though Andorra can be busy. Winter is possible but cold, and heavy snowfall may occasionally affect road conditions on the mountain approaches.
After exploring the cathedral, the drive into Andorra la Vella takes about 15 minutes. Once there, you can visit the Casa de la Vall, browse the duty-free shops along Avinguda Meritxell, admire the Salvador Dali clock-sculpture La Noblesse du Temps, and stop for a meal featuring local Pyrenean dishes such as escudella stew.
