Glamis Castle

The childhood home of Queen Elizabeth, birthplace of Princess Margaret, and setting for Shakespeare's ‘Macbeth’, Glamis is also one of Britain’s most haunted castles.

Om

Dating back to the 11th century, Glamis Castle was given to the Lyon family in 1376, and has been their home ever since. The castle underwent several revisions, with much of what stands today dating back to the 17th century. Glamis’ long history has given it plenty of time to collect its fair share of legends, from the murder of King Malcolm II, to a secret chamber inhabited by a monstrous creature. Said by Sir Walter Scott to be ‘somewhat too near to the dead’, enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guides bring the secrets of one of Britain’s most haunted castles to life. Today, the castle is still inhabited by the Earl and Countess of Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and walking through the richly decorated rooms, it’s readily apparent that Glamis isn’t a museum but a fabulous family home.
