The Kauri Museum
This fascinating museum details the lives of the early pioneers, and the mighty trees that supported them.
Om
The Kauri Museum details the pioneering past of the north island in relationship to the mighty kauri tree, and the industries it fueled. Within the museum, youâll find a model of an early 20th century house, complete with period furniture and costumed manikins, as well as an extensive collection of photographs and pioneering memorabilia, including a working saw mill. The museum also focuses on the trees themselves, with full-scale circumference outlines some ancient trees, as well as lumber and the worldâs largest collection of kauri gum. Part of the museumâs goal is to raise awareness about the need to conserve these mighty trees that once covered the islands, but have been decimated by deforestation over the centuries.
