Abu Simbel lies approximately 175 miles (280 kilometers) south of Aswan near the Sudanese border, requiring about three to three and a half hours of driving each way across desert landscape. Southern Egypt experiences extremely hot conditions, particularly from May through September when temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
