Standing a staggering 1,000 feet above sea level, the Bastei rock formation towers over the Elbe River. The panoramic views over the Elbe Valley have to be seen to be believed and year-on-year, the Bastei is the most popular viewing point in Saxon Switzerland. Visitors can be as adventuresome or sedate as they choose — there are walking trails for everyone. Some of the rocks are connected by the magnificent sandstone Bastei Bridge built in 1851 to replace the original wooden bridge from 1824, which remains one of the most photogenic attractions in the park. It is difficult to imagine that humans once lived among the wild and rugged nature and signs of how they used to live are still clearly visible. Whether taking a leisurely stroll or a stiff hike, the naturally fragrant air, phenomenal nature with jaw-dropping views and the stunning man-made bridge will make your stop-off one to never forget.
