After arriving at the Bastei, you’ll have the freedom to cross its rock bridge and enjoy the Elbe valley panoramas before continuing on to Konigstein Fortress, where you can explore the vast fortifications, all at your leisure. Meanwhile your driver will wait for you nearby, ensuring a stress-free return trip.
Standing a staggering 1,000 feet above sea level, the Bastei rock formation towers over the Elbe River. The panoramic views over the Elbe Valley have to be seen to be believed and year-on-year, the Bastei is the most popular viewing point in Saxon Switzerland. Visitors can be as adventuresome or sedate as they choose — there are walking trails for everyone. Some of the rocks are connected by the magnificent sandstone Bastei Bridge built in 1851 to replace the original wooden bridge from 1824, which remains one of the most photogenic attractions in the park. It is difficult to imagine that humans once lived among the wild and rugged nature and signs of how they used to live are still clearly visible. Whether taking a leisurely stroll or a stiff hike, the naturally fragrant air, phenomenal nature with jaw-dropping views and the stunning man-made bridge will make your stop-off one to never forget.

One of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe, Konigstein (‘King’s Rock’) is located in Germany’s idyllic Saxon Switzerland National Park. The original fortress structure was expanded in the late 1500s to form a walled citadel, considered by many to be unconquerable. This reputation is reflected time and time again in it’s history, with the castle alternating between keeping people out and locking them in! Over the years Konigstein has been used as a castle, a monastery, a provisions store, a military hospital, a country retreat, a POW camp and a state prison. Since 1955 Konigstein Fortress has been welcoming visitors to its renowned open-air military museum and remains one of Saxony’s most popular tourist attractions. Of particular interest is the well of Konigstein Fortress, which is 152.5 metres deep, the second deepest well in Europe.
