Cascate del Mulino is located near the town of Saturnia in southern Tuscany, approximately 93 miles (150 km) north of Rome. Terme di Saturnia is a private spa and golf resort nearby that charges admission and offers organized pool and wellness facilities. Cascate del Mulino is a free, open-air natural waterfall site fed by the same thermal spring. While it lacks formal amenities like changing rooms and poolside service, many visitors prefer it for its raw, natural beauty, the sense of freedom, and the stunning travertine landscape. Wear your swimwear under your clothes for ease, and bring a towel, flip-flops or sturdy sandals, and a change of clothes. The ground in and around the pools can be uneven and slippery, so footwear with grip is recommended. There is a small on-site cafe that opens during daytime hours for snacks and drinks, so it's a good idea to carry some water and light refreshments as well.
The site is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with no admission fee. For the quietest and most photogenic experience, early morning on a weekday is ideal, especially outside of peak summer months. The pools can attract significant crowds on weekends and in July and August. Arriving close to sunrise during cooler months offers a particularly atmospheric experience as steam rises from the warm water.
