Caves of Hercules

A legendary sea cave carved into the Atlantic cliffs near Tangier, the Caves of Hercules are steeped in mythology and known for an opening shaped like the continent of Africa.
What to see:
- Marvel at the Africa-shaped natural opening in the cave wall, facing the Atlantic Ocean
- Explore the ancient chambers, inhabited since Neolithic times and used for millstone quarrying
What to do:
- Visit at high tide to see waves crashing dramatically through the cave opening
- Walk to nearby Achakkar Beach, just steps from the cave entrance
What to know:
- The cave is small; plan 30 to 45 minutes for the full experience
- The ground inside can be wet and slippery; wear closed shoes with good grip
