Olympia is about 190 miles (310 km) from Athens, roughly a 3.5-hour drive. Buses from Athens' Kifissou station serve the route, with a journey time of about four to four and a half hours. The nearest cruise port is Katakolon, approximately 21 miles (34 km) away, from which Olympia is easily reached by car.
The Archaeological Museum of Olympia has ramps and smooth pathways to assist visitors with mobility needs. The site itself is largely open ground and can be uneven in places, which may present challenges for wheelchairs or strollers. Wearing comfortable, flat-soled shoes and bringing water is strongly recommended, especially in warmer months.
The archaeological site includes the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, which once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame is still ceremonially lit. The original ancient stadium, where athletes competed for over a thousand years, is one of the most awe-inspiring spots. The Archaeological Museum of Olympia, with the statue of Hermes by Praxiteles, is equally unmissable.
Greece uses the euro (EUR). In Olympia, cash is useful for smaller restaurants, local shops, and market stalls. ATMs are available in the town, and most hotels and larger restaurants accept major credit cards. It is advisable to carry some euros when visiting the archaeological site area.
Greek is the official language of Greece. In Olympia, English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and at the archaeological site, where staff and guides cater to an international audience. Signage at the site and museums is generally available in both Greek and English.
Tipping is not required in Greece but is appreciated for good service. Leaving around 10 percent in a restaurant is a common practice. Rounding up a taxi fare is also typical. At archaeological sites and museums, tipping guides is a kind gesture if you have received a helpful private tour.
The Peloponnese is known for its outstanding olive oil, local honey, and fresh produce. In Olympia's tavernas, look for grilled meats, fresh Greek salads, spanakopita (spinach and feta pie), and loukoumades (honey-drenched fried dough). Local wines from the surrounding region are also worth sampling alongside a traditional meal.
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit. Temperatures are comfortable, crowds are smaller, and the landscape is at its most attractive. Summer is the busiest period and can be very hot, with the open archaeological site offering little shade. Visiting in the afternoon or after 3 p.m. helps avoid peak crowds from cruise ship excursion groups.
