Ceske Budejovice

Home of the original Budweiser, this medieval city was once the official brewery for the Holy Roman Emperor.

About

Founded in the 13th century by King Ottokar II of Bohemia as a way to increase the royal presence in the homeland of the influential House of Rosenberg, České Budějovice has since grown to one of the country's largest settlements. Renowned for its beer, the city was once the imperial brewery for the Holy Roman Emperor himself. For those looking to get a taste of this tradition, it's possible to tour the modern Budweiser Budvar Brewery, more commonly known as 'Czech Budweiser', though reservations are required at least 2 days in advance. The Old Town is home to one of the largest squares in Europe, measuring a full hectare. For the best view, climb the the 16th century Black Tower for sweeping views across the square. The charming Town Hall, decorated with murals and bronze gargoyles, marks the hour with a tune from it’s glockenspiel-like bells, making it a great place to relax with a lager.
