Slovenia
The city of Idrija, a UNESCO World Heritage List site, has over 500 years of mining tradition and a large influence in world trade.
Idrija is located in western Slovenia and is most notable for its mercury mine (the second largest in the world). The town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012. Throughout history, the mine has produced over 147,000 tons of mercury. Its vast technical and industrial heritage can be seen throughout the entire town. Perhaps the highlight of Idrija is the Mercury Mine Museum and walking tour, which takes you deep into the underground world of Slovenia's oldest mine.
