New Zealand
From a bit of local fun, this roadside oddity has become a real attraction - the former Prime Minister of New Zealand even strung up her old brush.
The Toothbrush Fence began as the personal project of local eccentric Graeme Cairns in 2006. After having accumulated a collection of toothbrushes, he decided to string them up on a fence in the heart of New Zealand cow country. Soon his neighbors had added another 50 toothbrushes to the fence, and then came the kitchen brushes, electric toothbrushes, and a toilet brush. In 2007, the fence made it to prime time, being mentioned in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, and soon Cairns’ prophesy of people from around the world coming to visit the fence came true. Foreign tourists, and even a handful of celebrities, including New Zealand’s former Prime Minister Helen Clark, have left their brushes on the fence.
