Enisala Fortress
Explore Enisala Fortress, a spectacular 14th-century Genoese stronghold perched on a hilltop commanding panoramic views over the Danube Delta and Razim Lake, where Italian merchants built this strategic fortress to control trade routes and protect their commercial interests in the Black Sea region. Climb the medieval walls and towers that have withstood centuries of weather and conflict, discovering residential quarters, defensive structures, and a small chapel that served the fortress garrison while learning about the complex medieval politics that brought Genoese traders to these remote shores. The fortress offers breathtaking views over Europe's largest wetland, where the Danube creates a maze of channels, lakes, and reed beds before reaching the sea, providing habitat for hundreds of bird species and creating one of the continent's most important ecological reserves that remains largely pristine despite centuries of human activity. The fortress is closed on Mondays, but is otherwise open 10 AM to 6 PM. There is an entry fee of around $2.50.

Visit Argamum Fortress (Cetatea Argamum), the ruins of an ancient Greek and Roman settlement that controlled the northern entrance to the Danube Delta from the 7th century BC through the 6th century AD, demonstrating the strategic importance of this region throughout antiquity. Explore the archaeological remains of city walls, residential areas, and public buildings that reveal how Greek colonists established thriving communities along the Black Sea coast, later incorporated into the Roman Empire as crucial frontier settlements that defended the empire's northeastern borders. Walk among the ruins that overlook the Danube's final approach to the sea, imagining how ancient merchants and soldiers watched for barbarian invasions while facilitating trade between the civilized Mediterranean world and the mysterious lands beyond the river that the Romans called the edge of the known world. Entry is free.

Walk through the monastery grounds surrounded by ancient trees and peaceful gardens where monks cultivate both crops and spiritual wisdom, experiencing the contemplative atmosphere that has drawn pilgrims seeking spiritual renewal and connection to Romania's religious heritage that sustained the nation through its darkest periods and continues to provide guidance and comfort to believers seeking meaning in an increasingly complex modern world.
