About your trip

Deep in the lead-mining wilderness of Swaledale, Old Gang Smelting Mill provided the brooding industrial ruin at the heart of Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights. The 18th-century smelt mill sits in open moorland above Gunnerside — roofless, windswept and utterly uncompromising — exactly the landscape Emily Brontë imagined and Fennell captured on film.

Main attractions

  • The ruined smelt mill complex — founded in the 1700s and abandoned in the late 19th century — stretches across the moorside with its distinctive peat store, flue runs and chimney; one of the largest and best-preserved lead-smelting remains in England
  • The surrounding landscape featured extensively in Fennell's Wuthering Heights as the wild, elemental world surrounding Heathcliff and Catherine — the mill ruins stood in for the desolate industrial Gothic atmosphere central to the film's visual identity
  • The moorland walk from the Gunnerside Gill path to the mill (approximately 3km each way) passes through classic Dales scenery of drystone walls, shake holes and abandoned mine workings — the same terrain visible throughout the film

Things to do

  • Walk the gill path and locate the specific mill structures used as filming backdrops — the peat store archways and collapsed flue walls are the most recognisable on screen
  • Continue beyond the mill toward Level House Bridge for wider views across the Swaledale moorland that formed the film's wider landscape
  • The village of Gunnerside below offers a quieter, more sheltered base for the walk and gives context to the dale's lead-mining heritage

What to eat

  • The King's Head in Gunnerside is the closest traditional Dales pub to the site — simple food, real ale, and an interior that feels entirely unchanged; book ahead as it has limited covers

Take note

  • Old Gang is open moorland with no facilities, no signage, and no visitor infrastructure — wear waterproof boots and carry layers regardless of the forecast; Swaledale weather changes rapidly, and the exposed mill site offers no shelter. The track from Gunnerside is straightforward but can be boggy after rain. Mobile signal is unreliable throughout the valley.
