Originally occupied by nomadic Indian tribes and later inhabited by the Spanish, Ajijic has been influenced throughout history by people drawn to its picturesque location along the hilly north shore of Lake Chapala. Today, the lakeside getaway draws visitors looking for perfect weather, monthly cultural festivals and an endless array of shops and restaurants. Ajijic has a long history of art and local artists continue to create striking murals and sculptures around the city. Be sure to check out El Muro de las Calaveras (The Wall of Skulls) by local EfrƩn GonzƔlez which memorializes those who have died. Patrons pay their respects by placing candles between the clay faces in remembrance of Ajijic residents. If you happen to arrive on a Wednesday evening, you might be able to visit a local farmers market to grab some local treats or crafts.
