Altamura Cathedral
This medieval church is a treat for architecture lovers, blending masterful Gothic and Renaissance works with lavish Baroque ornamentation.
About
The church today has the opposite orientation as the original, though itâs not clear if the change dates from the early 14th century, or the enlargement carried out in 1521-1547, during which time the second bell tower was added. The older portal dates from the 14th century, and is depicts 22 scenes from the New Testament, while the 15th century Gothic portal is richly decorated and flanked by two lion statues. The 16th century rose window is a rare example of 14th century Apulian style and there is also a Gothic portal, probably from the early 15th century. The interior houses some impressive Renaissance artistry, such as the stone pulpit from 1545, 68 stall choir made from walnut and stone, and masterful crib from 1587.
