Arbeia Roman Fort
This UNESCO World Heritage Site played a key role in defending the Roman Empireâs most northern border.
About
Founded around 120 AD, the Roman Fort at Arbea guarded the main sea route to Hadrian's Wall, eventually becoming the main maritime supply fort for the wall, and was the site on the only permanent stone-built granaries in Britain. The fort was abandoned when the Romans left Britain in the 5th century, but not without the fort serving as the Roman Emperor's HQ for the Scottish invasion, a major base for the Roman army, having hosted troops from around the empire, and itâs said to be the birthplace of the Northumbrian King Oswin. The fort has been brought back to life through a faithful reconstruction, and filled with cultural events. Visitors can learn about the ancient Romans and their rule over Britain, as well as see gladiator battles, falconry displays, reenactments, storytelling.
