Arboretum Trsteno
The oldest arboretum in the world has weathered war, fire, and Game of Thrones.
About
This protected natural monument dates back to the late 15th century when a local noble family requested ship captains bring back seeds and plants from their travels. The 15 m aqueduct erected in 1492 is still in use today. Centuries of tranquility were broken in 1991 when the Yugoslav People's Army launched a series of attacks and set the arboretum afire, destroying a large part of it. The arboretum was further severely damaged in 2000 by a forest fire. The pride of the arboretum, two Oriental Planes that are over 500 years old, survived both disasters undamaged. Today, the arboretum is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful walk, gaze out over the Adriatic, or hunt for locations used in Game of Thrones.
