Benevento

With a history so long that the Romans argued about its origins, it’s no surprise there’s a wealth of ancient monuments, including a UNESCO Site.

About

One of the chief cities of Samnium, Benevento’s origins likely go back even early, but it first appears in history as a Samnite city the resisted the Romans through two wars. The Romans left their mark on the city, with their Leproso bridge still offering safe-crossing of the Sabato River. Trajan’s Arch, built to celebrate the extension of the Via Appia from Benevento to Brindisi, is well preserved, with beautiful bas-reliefs on both façades. The Roman Theatre, commissioned by Emperor Hadrian, is still used for theatrical performances today. The Longobards ruled the city for about five centuries, leaving behind the 8th century Santa Sofia Church. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, as part of a group of seven buildings that represent the Longobards' influence in Italy, it still has fragments of its 8th- to early 9th-century frescoes.
