Founded by Sebastián de Belalcázar in 1536, Cali remained a relatively quiet agricultural city for much of its history. However, as the only major Colombian city with access to the Pacific, Cali now has one of the country’s fastest-growing economies. Cali’s historic center, known as the Barrio San Antonio, has become the hippest place in town, with trendy cafes, bars, and restaurants taking up residence in its charming colonial buildings. While walking the streets, you’re bound to notice the beating heart of the city - the irresistible rhythm of salsa. Known around the world as the salsa capital, Cali is filled with dance clubs, dance schools, dance shows, and impromptu street dances. There’s even a salsa circus (that you’ll want to reserve tickets in advance for). Of course, if the rhythm doesn’t move you, there’s a few more downtempo places to visit, like the cat-sculpture-filled Cat Park, or the 26-meter-tall El Cristo Rey.
