Connecting their empire from Mexico to Belize and Honduras, the Mayans built Ka’an Ku’um. Remnants of this vital trading post can be explored throughout Cancun’s archeological sites, the most prominent being El Meco and El Rey. Today Cancún is known for much more than what it used to be. Take a boat or jet ski and tour the coastline through the natural paradise of Nichupte Lagoon and into canals of mangrove forests. Delve into the Caribbean Sea and snorkel through one of the world’s largest coral reefs, or dive deeper to witness the beauty of the Underwater Museum of Art. If you’re really lucky, you’ll spot a wonder of the animal kingdom, a colossal Whale shark!
