Cartago

One of Colombia’s oldest pueblos is renowned for its intricate embroidered fabrics that originated in Moorish Spain.

About

Cartago is one of the oldest towns in Colombia, having been founded by the Spanish in 1540. Originally, it was located where Pereira now stands, but the townsfolk, having found flatter and more workable land to the west, relocated the settlement to its present location. Despite its sprawling size, the city has managed to retain its history and culture, and is still dotted with fine Colonial monuments, such as the charming Iglesia de Guadalupe. For those looking for a more intimate glimpse of Colonial living, the Casa Virrey Museum is in a Colonial house originally built for a Spanish noble’s son, and showcases artwork, old pictures of the area, and antique furnishings. The city is also renowned for its embroidery, a tradition that can be traced back to Moorish Spain, and even offers guided tours of the Frixio embroidery factory.
