Cenote Chaak Tun

Sunlight and trees pour into a small hole in the heart of this stunning underground cenote ornamented by beautiful cave formations.

About

The surreal subterranean scene at Cenote Chaak Tun makes it easy to see why the Mayans believed cenotes were entrances to the underworld. A boardwalk through the jungle leads visitors to the crystal clear waters of the first cenote, where you can stop to cool off. A short walk further through the tropical forest, and the path leads to a small opening in the earth, with a spiral staircase descending into its depths. Once underground, an opening in the cavern ceiling is the only source of natural light, which baths a small, tree-covered island. Around this is the cenotes vast cavern, where a wealth of stalactites and other cave formations are illuminated by limited artificial lighting, leaving some dark corners to add to the cenote’s mystique. Please note: tickets are not included. Entrance is with a guided tour, which costs $40. You can book in advance for a discount at https://chaaktun.com.mx/
