Mexico

Chetumal

The state capital might be relatively young, but along with the Yucatan’s longest promenade, it has the best Mayan museum in the region.

About

While the Maya had a city known as Chetumal, this pre-Columbian capital was likely today’s Santa Rita in Belize. Mexico’s modern Chetumal wasn’t established until 1898 as a port town, and was populated by settlers from Belize invited by the town’s founder. Today, the laid-back capital of Quintana Roo is a popular home base for travellers looking to explore the nearby Mayan ruins, or continue on to Belize. But hidden among the busy port and thatch-roofed beach bars is the state’s largest and most comprehensive Mayan museum. For those who’d rather spend their time outdoors, the Boulevard de Bahía is the longest promenade in the Yucatán Peninsula, and offers great views of the Bay of Chetumal.
