Complesso Basilicale Paleocristiano
This collection of early Christian basilicas dates back to the 4th century, and is has preserved early art, architecture, and burial practices.
About
During Roman rule, the area was a necropolis, and the burial site of Saint Felix who has been venerated since the early days of Christianity. His tomb represents one of the first Christian burial monuments. The primitive basilica was unable to accommodate the immense crowds of faithful who flocked to the site, so in the early 5th century a new basilica in honor of Saint Felice was erected. Over the centuries more places of worship dedicated to other saints were erected around the tomb of Saint Felix. Today, the 7 buildings allow visitors a detailed look at early Christian frescoes, exposed ancient tombs, and proto-Romanesque architecture in a secluded and peaceful setting.
