Crystal Forest
Amidst the rolling badlands are the remains of prehistoric trees that have transformed into semi-precious gems.
About
The Crystal Forest sits within the Petrified Forest National Park, but we promise thereâs nothing to fear. Rather, âpetrifiedâ refers to the fossilization of wood from the trees as a result of them having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process. This mineralization leaves beautiful crystals in the petrified logs, hence the name, Crystal Forest! Unfortunately, 19th century fortune seekers noticed that the enormous trees were made up of semi-precious stones, and dynamited many of them. The short hiking loop is accessible and achievable for most, and an enjoyable and unique opportunity to see petrified wood deposits. Depart from the parking lot and hit a fork in the road where youâll choose your direction. Both routes provide plenty of scenic views and ample crystalised logs for your perusal. Top tip: visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best photographs, as the sun is in prime position to illuminate the landscape and crystals.
