Devil's Wall

This unusual sandstone rock formation is shrouded in mystery and folklore.

About

A band of exposed sandstone can be seen for miles around the plains of the Harz Foreland. Various legends say the Devil built the wall as part of a competition with God for dominion of the world but didn’t complete it in time to win. Other legends say everything on one side of the wall does indeed belong to the Devil (we will let you guess which side!). Due to the high demand for sandstone in the 1800s, the Teufelsmaur was recognized by the government as a protected landmark in 1833 to prevent harvesting of the strange wall. It is one of Germany’s oldest nature reserves, and today, it can be reached by managed hiking trails with safety railings.
