Donauworth

Now a picturesque riverside city, centuries ago a Catholic riot at this strategic river crossing helped spark the Thirty Years’ War.

About

According to legend, Donauwörth was founded by two fishermen on Ried island at the confluence of the Danube and Wörnitz rivers. The city prospered greatly thanks to its strategic position. Over the centuries, the city saw its fair share of religious strife, even having a hand in sparking the Thirty Years’ War, which left its mark on the historic town center. Today, visitors can enjoy the historic buildings of the renovated old town, watched over by the 11th century Monastery of the Holy Cross, which holds an alleged piece of the original cross. In the summer, visitors can scale the tower of the 15th century Gothic parish church for panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. The town’s oldest buildings can be found on the Reichsstrasse, which leads to landmarks like the town hall, the gateway to the Ried island ,and the former seat of the Teutonic Knights.
