Dornburg

What’s better than one amazing castle? Three castles and a still-running Bauhaus ceramics studio.

About

Not a well-known name on the German tour, Dornburg has something that even major cities do not - three castles from different eras connected by a single garden! The gardens alone are worth the trip, neat, green, with a great view into the wooded valley below. The opportunity to see the 12th century Altes Schloss (Old Castle, home to two Holy Roman emperors), 17th century Renaissanceschloss (Renaissance Castle, built on the site of an older castle), and 18th century Neues Schloss or "Rokokoschloss" (built in the Italian style between 1728–1748, featuring some pretty gardens too) all within a pleasant stroll of each other ought not to be missed. Just across from the Rokokoschloss is a Bauhaus ceramics workshop founded by Walter Gropius himself in 1920. Based in the castle's 18th century stables, they're the only Bauhaus workshop in left in their original location, and remain in operation to this day!
