Ducal Castle of Corigliano Calabro

Dating back to the middle ages, this historic castle is overflowing with opulent Romanticist ornamentation.

About

Built in the 11th century after the Norman king Robert Guiscard defeated the Byzantines. Eventually the castle would become home to the kingdom’s richest dynasties, who would transform the castle into a noble home. The palace as it stands today is the result of 19th century renovation commissioned by the Compagna family. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful botanical garden in what was once the castle’s moat before heading into the sumptuous interior to admire the spectacular Hall of the Mirrors, and vibrant frescoes in the chapel depicting scenes from the Old Testament, the Crusades, and Roman history. The crown jewel of the church is the marvellously painted triptych depicting the Madonna of the Roses, housed in an ornately carved Neo-Gothic frame.
