Eltz Castle
This sensational medieval castle in Germany has been owned by the same branch of the family since the twelfth-century, totaling 33 generations in all.
About
Sat snugly on a 200-foot rock spur in the middle of a dense forest, Eltz was originally comprised of three castles as per the custom of the times and was shared by three families in order to ease costs. When two of the these merged in 1815, the castle structures were combined, with two parts now open to the public and the third still lived in today by the owning family. This breathtakingly picturesque castle is accessible to visitors through short tours that last less than an hour. The tour takes visitors around many of the castle rooms and provides a glimpse into the life of German nobility during medieval times. The superb Gothic chapel is a must see and many of the castleās 80 rooms are crammed with centuries-old furniture, art, and weaponry, much of it decorated with the Eltz family crest (as theyāve lived here for over 800 years, maybe a bit of hoarding can be forgiven). The castle is reachable from a nearby parking, located 10 minutes away on foot.
