Flensburg
Many of this medieval port townâs most beautiful monument are thanks to the fortune it made trading rum.
About
Founded around the 13th century, Flensburg quickly rose to prominence thanks to its sheltered port and excellent fisheries, and prospered greatly in the 18th century by importing sugar cane from the West Indies to produce rum - even today, the city is still home to a rum distillery. Today, visitors can enjoy a walk along the harbour boardwalk, admiring the quaint houses and bobbing sailboats while snacking on a traditional fish roll. Next to the harbour, the Museumswerft Flensburg preserves traditional ship-building techniques, even hosting workshops for visitors to try their hand at it. At the Museumsberg Flensburg, visitors are treated to two museums in a single historic building, exhibiting regional art and culture from the 17th to 20th centuries in historically furnished room. The 14th century Gothic Nikolaikirche has a beautiful 18th century altarpiece, and an exceptionally ornate double organ.
