Iglesia de San Lucas

This humble-looking church was the very first to be built on the South Pacific coast, and boasts a breathtaking altarpiece attesting to its importance.

About

Built by the Spanish in 1536, the Iglesia de San Lucas is likely the first church ever built on the coast of the South Pacific. Constructed from stone slabs, much of the building likely used materials from the pre-Columbian site it was built atop. While the structure might look simple with its stone-and-mud facade, step inside, and you’ll be treated to an impossibly ornate gilded altarpiece that stands in stark contrast to the simple wooden floors and whitewashed walls.
