This thousand-year-old shrine complex sits atop Mt. Otokoyama, surrounded by nature and history.
About
Iwashimizu HachimangĹŤ, located in Yawata, offers a serene escape from the bustling city and a deep dive into Japan's rich Shinto traditions. The shrine's vast size, with an inner hall, offerings hall, performance hall, and gate forming the main complex, is a noticeable departure from many city shrines. Its vermilion appearance dominates the mountain skyline, especially striking during the New Year when giant purifying arrows adorn the entrance. washimizu HachimangĹŤ enshrines Hachiman, the god of the Imperial lineage and warriors, in a trinity of deified spirits. Visitors can explore the inner sanctum, a rare opportunity in Shinto shrines, and join guided tours to learn about its rich history, architecture, and captivating wood carvings. Five hundred stone lanterns grace the precincts, welcoming visitors with their soft glow along the entrance path. And surprisingly, Iwashimizu HachimangĹŤ holds a small memorial to Thomas Edison, connected to its bamboo groves, used in the invention of the electric lightbulb. The shrine is open 9AM to 5PM daily.
