Schloss Johannisburg

Johannisburg Chateau dominates the picturesque town of Aschaffenburg in Germany and although close to destroyed in World War II has now been restored to its former glory.

About

The red sandstone chateau sits close to the banks of the River Main while its impressive façade and Renaissance architecture can be seen from miles around while the chateau itself offers excellent photo opportunities of the river and the surroundings. Built in the early seventeenth-century, the chateau took twenty years to restore following wartime events and today functions as a museum with models, sketches and photographs that show the various conditions of the building throughout its history. In addition to the impressive art collection featuring both modern art and the old masters, the chateau also houses some unique exhibits, such as ecclesiastical vestments from Mainz Cathedral and a quirky collection of historic architectural buildings made from cork. There is also a chateau restaurant serving refreshments and after viewing the interior, many visitors like to take a few moments to walk around the courtyard and savor this beautiful chateau from the outside.
