La Purisima Mission

California’s only complete Spanish Catholic mission complex offers an enchanting look at the area’s history.

About

La Purisima Mission was first established by the Spanish Franciscan order in 1787, though the original site was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812, so the mission was rebuilt at its present location. Designed as a self-sufficient ranch run by the Spanish and Chumash indians, at its peak, the La Purisima Mission was home to 1,436 Chumash people, who tended 3,230 cattle, 5,400 sheep, 306 horses, and 39 mules. Today, the mission offers a look into California’s early history through its well-presented visitor center, and the restored buildings, where you can see everything from the bunks where the 6 guards slept to the charming chapels. Throughout the year, the mission holds regular re-creation, to show how its residents engaged in weaving, pottery making, candle making, blacksmithing, livestock production, and leatherwork. And if you need to stretch your legs, the nearly 2,000 acre park is crossed by 25 miles of hiking trails.
