Mandeville is a slow-paced, laid-back city surrounded by lush green hills and located in the central part of the island. Once the country’s economic hub, this charming town is now a popular destination for retired Jamaicans who have returned from abroad, attracted by the high standard of living and tranquil environment. When in Mandeville, take time to enjoy the city’s architecture, many of the buildings being an example of the 19th-century Georgian style in Jamaican interpretation such as the Mandeville Court House or Manchester Parish Church, but many of the residential buildings, too. Mandeville is home to several parks and gardens, the most prominent being Mrs Carmen Stephenson’s Garden, one of the best-maintained in Jamaica. Golf enthusiasts can perfect their swing at the Manchester Golf Club, the first golf course in the Caribbean, founded in 1868. Lastly, be sure to pay a visit to the historic Mandeville Hotel to dine and drink. Mandeville is often described as the town for the ” newlyweds or the nearly deads,” but that is a good thing: the visitors can recharge and soak in its peacefulness.
