Mirobriga ruins
History lovers will revel in wandering around the remains of an ancient Roman settlement, complete with Portugalâs only hippodrome.
About
Built on the site of a Celtic settlement, the Romans expanded the town in around the 1st century AD. The siteâs baths are some of the best preserved in the country and feature two buildings, as well as an impressive heating infrastructure. The single-arch bridge leads to the forum, an Imperial temple and a temple dedicated to Venus. The other buildings located around the forum and to the south make up the commercial area, which had several shops and an inn. Just outside of town is the 370 metre long hippodrome.
