Nijmegen
The oldest city in the Netherlands was made for walking - from its historic quarter to boat-watching, to the world’s largest multi-day walking event.
About
Founded in the 1st century as a Roman military settlement, the city has been continuously inhabited ever since, earning it the distinction of the oldest city in the Netherlands. However, during World War II, the city has bombed and shelled by both sides, destroying many of the city’s historic monuments, with ambitious city-planners taking care of many others. Fortunately, the historic core pulled through, leaving a pleasant neighborhood near the water for visitors to explore. At its heart, the Great Market is lined with historic buildings, such as the sixteenth-century weighing hall that is now a restaurant. The market also grants access to St. Stevenskerk, with a 15th century Latin school along with the 13th century St. Church. The Waal River is Europe's busiest waterway, meaning visitors can walk across the Waalbrug bridge to watch the constant stream of barges and ferries roll by.
