Nordlingen

Built inside a giant meteor crater, many of this medieval town’s buildings are studded with microscopic diamonds.

About

About 15 million years ago, a large meteor crashed into Bavaria, leaving a huge crater, and forming micro-diamonds due to the impact’s immense pressure. In 898, the town of Nordlingen was established, built using the local, diamond-laced stone. Today’ it’s one of only three towns in Germany with an intact city wall - a landmark visitors can still walk along to this day. Filled with half-timbered houses and historic buildings, the symbol of the town is the 15th century St. George’s Church, and its belltower ā€˜Daniel’. It’s estimated the stone used to make the church contains 5000 carats of diamonds. After admiring the beautiful baroque altar, topped by a 15th century crucifix, visitors can scale the tower for views of the crater, and the town below - a sight used in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
