Petralona Cave
Though itâs filled with beautiful formations, this caveâs real treasures are its many fossils, including a 200,000 year old skull.
About
Discovered in 1959 when an opening appeared in the rocks, this cave became an archaeological hot-spot a year later, when the fossilized skull of a 200,000 year old hominid was discovered. Though the skull is now in the University of Thessaloniki, the many other archaeological findings, ranging from animal fossils to Stone Age tools, are on display in the adjoining museum. A guided tour brings visitors through the caveâs halls and chamber where visitors can admire the exceptional formations, building up like giant cacti, or hanging in delicate curtains.
